From
J.S. Bach's Prelude, Fugue and Allegro in D for cembalo, which was
a sort of lute-harpsichord, apparently. I can or could play the whole
suite from memory. In fact, I performed it two days before this recording,
in Glasgow.
This prelude is in the Grade VIII classical guitar syllabus for 2000/1
although this re-arrangement for steel-strung makes it a more rolling,
folksy sort of tune. I've refingered the whole suite this way which
is a beautiful waste of time because folk audiences quite properly
don't want to hold still for eleven whole minutes of Bach in the middle
of what is supposed to be a comedy act and classical audiences have
the choice of many gorgeous, recorded versions of the piece before
they get round to this hybrid oddity. Nonetheless, I'll do a steel-strung
take of at least the Allegro on the next album for the excellent reason
that it's a great tune.
Meanwhile, if you want to hear it done properly, on catgut, check
out Julian Byzantine's version: it really swings.
